I was having a dinner with some literary friends the other night, and after our third drink, two of them began anxiously discussing a new underground "classic" as they called. I find that word terribly overused, and when combined with underground, I usually cringe. I heard words like "vision", "end of the world", "energy wars" etc..

I didn't want to read it, but the name CACTUS LAND, stuck with me, and quickly found it on Amazon, so I decided against good judgement to buy it. I am very glad I did.

The buzz about this novel is well deserved. The novel envisions an apocalyptic future for our planet. Some say it is so real, that it has changed their lives. This eerie vision of the future is penned by author Robert Bonomo. The novel was five years in the making and paints a bleak picture of what awaits us.

The setting for the novel is an imaginary world, based on Western Europe, in a time frame best described as the near future. A modern world plagued by terrorism, rumors of war and so much propaganda/publicity/newstainment that nobody is quite sure what is real and what is manipulation.

When asked where the idea came from, Mr. Bonomo, answered "I had an apocalyptic dream as a teenager, it plagued me for years, and after cutting my teeth on two previous novels, I finally gave the vision a voice."

Bonomo has a lived a colorful life, living and working in Argentina, Spain, Miami, San Francisco, New York and Kamchatka. There has been much controversy regarding the end of the novel. Without giving away what happens, it will suffice to say that it is a sublime twist that has left readers spellbound. What does it mean? "I don't know, and that is why it works, I think it was more for me to write than to understand," he continued, "I think it is up to the readers, really, to find the meaning, all I know is that it had to end the way it did."

One reviewer put it this way "Usually novels that set up such an enormous conflict, in this case, cataclysmic, can never satisfy with the resolution. Cactus Land is one of the few novels I have ever read that really surpasses a tremendous setup with its climax."

A mix of world politics, romance, immigration, terrorism, and a touch of the supernatural, Cactus Land is truly a timely novel for a confused world.
