Dog clothes are often viewed as only for dogs of the rich and famous. How many times have you seen a celebrity with their tiny dog all decked out in leather jackets or a pink satin skirt?
At first glance, it seems silly doesn't it? However, what about those of us who have dogs and are not in the public eye?
I think that if you are a dog owner, you need to give some serious thought about clothing for your furry friend. I am not suggesting anything too crazy, just some items that could make your doggie more comfortable.
My example is based on personal experience. We adopted a Chihuahua/Terrier mix female, named Hope. We got her as a three-month-old puppy and she is now eighteen months old.
When we began to train her to go outside on a leash for her bathroom time, we came across a problem. Hope is small and gets cold very easily. When we got ready for her walks, whoever was taking her would take an extra moment to get on his or her raincoat.
As soon as Hope came back in after being praised for her behavior, we would promptly dry her off with a warm towel. One night I realized how inhumane we were being to our newest family member.
The next day, Hope and I went to our local pet store to see if I could find something that could make her outdoor excursions more comfortable for her. Wow! Did I hit the jackpot!
There are more types of dog clothing than I thought possible. A quick internet search can give you an even greater amount from which to choose.
Hope and I found a raincoat with an attached hood and matching rain shoes. We also found some non-skid socks, which she loves for two reasons. The first is that they keep her paws toasty. The second is that now she can run full speed after our teenage daughters through the house, which has hardwood flooring.
Of course, you can find the clothes that are just fun, too. There are all sorts. I saw t-shirts, berets, leg warmers, and even Halloween costumes. There is jewelry as well. Hey, dogs like bling, too!
So, if you have never considered dog clothes to be of any importance, think again.
Remember this: dogs are our best friends and love us unconditionally. They deserve any little comfort we can provide.
Okay, I will confess: Hope got a little tiara, too!
